PUBLIC SAFETY NOTICE: Coyote Sightings in Town
The Town of Tisdale has received reports of coyotes being sighted within town limits. We understand these encounters may be concerning, and public safety remains a top priority.
What Residents Should Know
Coyotes are wildlife and are occasionally observed in or near communities, particularly during winter months when natural food sources are limited. While sightings can be alarming, coyotes generally avoid people and do not pose a significant risk when left undisturbed.
Important Safety and Legal Information
Residents are reminded that attempting to deter, confront, or manage wildlife independently, especially through the use of weapons or deterrent devices, may be unsafe and unlawful.
Firearms: The discharge of firearms within town limits is prohibited under Town of Tisdale Bylaw No. 8/03.
Bear bangers and similar devices: While these may not be classified as firearms, their use within town boundaries presents safety risks and may conflict with the intent of the bylaw, which is to protect public safety.
Controlled products: Under The Safe Public Places Act, the possession and use of weapons or controlled products in public spaces is regulated. Bear spray is a controlled product and may only be used for its intended purpose. Improper possession or use in public areas may result in enforcement action.
Encouraging or using bear bangers, bear spray, or similar deterrents within town limits may expose individuals and the Town to public safety risks and potential legal liability.
What Residents Should Do
- Do not approach, chase, or attempt to scare coyotes
- Keep pets on a leash and supervise small children when outdoors
- Remove attractants such as food waste, pet food, bird seed, or fallen fruit
- Report sightings to the Town Office or Conservation Officers so the situation can be assessed appropriately.
The Town of Tisdale is committed to providing residents with accurate, lawful, and safety-focused information. Wildlife-related concerns are best addressed by trained professionals who are authorized to respond appropriately and within the law.
Where a legitimate public safety risk is identified, the Town of Tisdale will work in coordination with local Conservation Officers to attempt to trap and remove any dangerous animals, in accordance with applicable legislation and best practices.
Please ensure that you are obtaining accurate information by contacting the Town Office or your local authorities, rather than relying on unofficial sources or social media posts.
